At the entrance to CAVA ALBA, the first Croatian gallery dedicated to handicrafts created by people with disabilities, a striking stone sculpture of a hand has been installed — a symbol of support, creativity and human strength. The hand emerges from the wall above the entrance, as if rising directly from the stone, and holds a sphere in its palm, representing an idea, a possibility and a new beginning.
The sculpture was created according to a sketch by sculptor Magdalena Modrić, and executed with precision in white Brač stone by our master craftsman Dražen Jakšić. The work is a donation of Jakšić Gallery, made to support the meaningful mission of CAVA ALBA — giving visibility, space and dignity to the creative work of people with disabilities.
White Brač stone, known for its purity and refined texture, proves to be the ideal material for this piece. It clearly reveals the strength of the gesture, the volume of the palm and the tension of the fingers, while natural light enhances the symbolic power of the hand. Though technically demanding, this project once again demonstrates that our stonemasonry workshop has the expertise, craftsmanship and experience needed to realise even the most complex artistic ideas.
The conceptual design and interior of the gallery were created by renowned architect Damir Rako and Porticus Architects, whose thoughtful approach blends contemporary design with the warm, humanistic message of the entire project.
We are honoured to have contributed to this significant artistic and social initiative. The stone hand is not merely an aesthetic element — it is a lasting reminder of the value of human work, inclusion and the power of art to open space for everyone.
