Biočina Family Tomb – a contemporary sculptural approach in white Brač stone

The Biočina family tomb, located in Postira on the island of Brač, is a unique example of contemporary stone design in white Brač stone. Positioned beside an old stone church, within a space defined by tradition, it subtly introduces a new artistic language — clean lines, elegant curves and precisely shaped surfaces that together form a refined modern whole.

The central visual feature of this tomb is the curved line that flows across the headstone and gently bends backward, reminiscent of a sheet of paper softly lifted by a breeze. This line defines the character of the monument — softness emerging from solid stone, movement within permanence, a delicate transition from vertical to horizontal.

The headstone consists of three stone elements, compositionally aligned and technically demanding to craft:

  • The first element rises gently and then breaks abruptly, creating a visual pause that adds rhythm and dynamism.

  • The central and largest element curves upward to form the main vertical plane of the monument. It symbolizes the quiet descent of the deceased into eternal rest, while the form remains strong, stable and monumental.

  • The third element, after a subtle wave, merges seamlessly with the horizontal surface of the tomb, harmonising the sculptural gesture with functionality.

This interplay of stone forms makes the tomb visually striking: everything is precisely balanced, yet nothing is conventional. It is a sculptural dialogue rooted in a deep understanding of the material and contemporary artistic sensibility.

Smooth, minimalist surfaces and gentle curves create a refined contrast to the traditional monuments surrounding it. In white Brač stone — renowned for its purity and durability — these lines gain even greater clarity and elegance.

At the base of the tomb lies a discreet signature, an intimate detail that complements the composition without disturbing its harmony.
simple, slightly inclined geometric vase is positioned at the front, thoughtfully integrated into the overall design — just enough to follow the visual language of the monument.

The Biočina family tomb represents a meeting point of artistic vision, exceptional stonemasonry skill and technical precision. Within a traditionally shaped cemetery, it introduces a contemporary form crafted with respect and balance.
The result is a dignified and unique work that preserves memory in white Brač stone — serene, refined and unmistakably original.
