Public space needs elements that serve people well, withstand everyday use and belong to the architecture of their setting. Jaksic Stonemasonry Workshop makes stone benches, planters, fountains, viewpoint elements and other work for squares, promenades and designed outdoor spaces.

The gallery presents projects at different scales, from individual pieces of urban furniture to elements that help define an entire setting. Form, stone, surface finish and installation are adapted to the purpose and location.

Stone in spaces used every day

A stone bench, planter or fountain is more than an isolated object. Height, width, position and distance from routes of movement influence how people stop, sit and use the setting. A good element must be functional and sufficiently calm to support the architecture around it.

For outdoor work, stone, surface finish, edges, drainage, support and anchoring need to be coordinated with the project conditions. Large elements also require advance planning for access, lifting and installation, so the completed piece can be positioned without unnecessary work to the finished landscape.

From the site plan to an installed element

    We consider users, movement, the scale of the setting and exposure conditions.

    Dimensions, edges, joints, supports and the relationship with the base are coordinated.

    Blocks and surfaces are selected to suit the form and outdoor use.

    Access, lifting and installation are planned for the weight and conditions on site.

Urban elements developed for the project

An element can develop from an architectural drawing, an original idea or a direct discussion about the needs of the place. A series of benches or planters requires consistent proportions and details, while an individual element may respond more strongly to a particular position, view or existing structure within a square.
