Jelinčić Family Tomb, Muć

- the Jakšić stonemasonry workshop from Brač has been preserving the tradition of shaping white Brač stone into headstones and family tombs for decades. Our work in Muć is an example of how tradition can be carried into the present through a modern interpretation of classical forms. At first glance, the tomb radiates simplicity, yet within that simplicity lies profound symbolism. The entire project is based on clean lines and clear forms reminiscent of classical monumental compositions, but expressed in a minimalist and contemporary spirit. The central element is a fissure in the stone that forms the outline of a cross. Instead of ornamentation or decorative detail, the cross is emphasised precisely by the absence of material – a negative space – creating a powerful, modern, and spiritually charged effect. Another striking feature are the vases integrated into the sides of the headstone. Rather than appearing as an addition, they are shaped as part of the whole, balancing functionality with aesthetics. In this way, the classical idea of the vase as a place for flowers receives a modern reinterpretation in both form and execution. The whiteness of Brač stone stands out strongly in contrast with the dark imported stone monuments in the surroundings. Our tomb is immediately distinctive, bringing a sense of light, elegance, and serenity. This contrast further reinforces the idea of modern design rooted in classical values. The tomb in Muć demonstrates how the Jakšić workshop unites centuries-old tradition with a modern design approach. Our works in white Brač stone are not just monuments – they are interpretations of life, memory, and eternity, shaped through a contemporary language yet always grounded in classical heritage.
