Tomb for the Brešković Family

- the Jakšić stonemasonry workshop proudly presents the tomb created for the Brešković family, known by the nickname “Suja.” This work is especially meaningful to us, as it is dedicated to a family with whom we have long-standing collaboration and deep respect. The design and execution therefore go beyond craftsmanship – they represent an emotional story carved into Brač stone. The distinctiveness of this tomb lies in its powerful symbolism. The Brešković family has been engaged in quarrying stone from their own quarry for generations, and this life’s work became the guiding idea of the design. Our principal designer, Dražen Jakšić, drew inspiration from the traditional system of stone splitting. The characteristic holes and grooves left behind by this method were integrated into the design of both the headstone and the tomb slab, turning them into a visual language that speaks of the family’s heritage. Through this approach, fractured stone becomes more than a surface – it becomes a symbol of labour, resilience, and identity. The family name “Suja” appears precisely within these fractured areas, on both the headstone and the tomb slab, like a reflection. It seems as though the name had always existed within the stone, waiting to be revealed. The overall design is simple yet monumental. The purity of white Brač stone, enriched with textured surfaces and meaningful symbols, gives the tomb a striking presence. It is not ornament that defines this work, but the authenticity of form and the story it tells. The Brešković tomb demonstrates how stonemasonry can transcend technique and become a testimony. It is not only a place of remembrance, but also a permanent story in stone – about a family, their work, their connection to the quarry, and their life in stone.
