Tomb for the Kumac Family

- the Kumac family tomb, crafted from pure white Brač stone, represents a refined fusion of timeless craftsmanship, contemporary design, and deep symbolism. Created under the artistic direction of Dražen Jakšić, this project stands as a perfect example of harmony between material, form, and meaning. The entire composition is inspired by the motion of the sea, a recurring motif in Jakšić’s work. The softly rising and descending stone surfaces evoke the image of a calm wave – a metaphor for the rhythm of life, the constant flow of time, and the balance between peace and strength. Despite its massive stone structure, the tomb appears fluid and light, as if gently shaped by wind and water. The headstone (lapida) is designed with elegant curvature and a smooth finish, giving the monument a sculptural and refined character. The family name is engraved in a delicate script, adding a personal and intimate touch to the design. The most striking feature is the rear vertical element with a circular cut-out, resembling the crest of a wave or a gust of wind. This unique form brings movement into the stillness of stone and symbolises continuity, spirituality, and the eternal presence of nature’s power, especially the sea that has deeply marked the life of the Kumac family. Carved from monolithic blocks of Brač stone, with minimal joints and exceptional precision, the tomb reflects the mastery of Jakšić stone workshop. It stands as a modern interpretation of traditional stone art – a monument that unites craftsmanship, design, and emotion in perfect harmony.
