Tomb for the Horvat Family

- this tomb, located in Čakovec, represents a completely different approach to tomb design, where the only element of the composition is a large stone cross. Unlike traditional forms that combine a headstone and base, this concept reduces everything to a single powerful and symbolic shape. The result is a modern and contemplative tomb, marked by simplicity and spiritual strength. The cross for the tomb is crafted from fine white stone, with precisely balanced proportions and clean lines. What makes it distinctive is that the vertical part of the cross appears to break in half and continue horizontally, creating a sense of movement and fluidity within an otherwise static form. This stone cross thus becomes both a sculptural centrepieceand a symbol of faith and transcendence. A striking feature of the tomb is the stone plaque leaning against the cross, where the letters are engraved in reverse – designed as if they were meant to be read from the sky rather than from the ground. This poetic detail introduces a deep symbolic dialogue between heaven and earth. The tomb’s construction follows minimalist principles, with pure geometric lines and refined craftsmanship that enhance the natural elegance of the stone. The result is a modern and timeless headstone, rooted in tradition yet expressing a new aesthetic sensitivity. This tomb was designed by Dražen Jakšić, whose artistic vision brings together architecture, symbolism, and fine stonemasonry, creating a memorial of rare simplicity and depth.
