A Tragedy Carved in Brač Stone – Monument to Firefighter Goran Komlenac

Another great tragedy has been carved into Brač stone. Two years ago, in the area of Orašac–Gromača near Zaton in Dubrovnik, firefighter Goran Komlenac, a member of the Dubrovnik Fire Department and the Orašac Volunteer Fire Brigade, lost his life while fighting a wildfire.

The City of Dubrovnik commissioned our academic sculptor Lovre Jakšić to create a stone bust – a portrait sculpture – of the fallen firefighter. This sculpture, made from white Brač stone, was unveiled on his birthday in the park of the Antun Masle Primary School in Orašac. The unveiling ceremony was solemn and emotional, attended by members of the fire brigade and the army, and widely covered in the media.

The bust is a powerful example of a portrait in stone, showing not only technical mastery but also deep respect for the person it represents. Lovre Jakšić, known for his long-standing work on figurative sculptures for public and private spaces, collaborates regularly with institutions and associations to create artworks dedicated to notable individuals and meaningful events. His portait sculptures, especially those made from Brač stone, stand out for their precision and emotive strength.

This stone sculpture is not just a monument – it is a permanent tribute, a spomenik carved in white Brač stone that keeps the memory of Goran Komlenac alive.
