To mark the 500th anniversary of the publication of Marko Marulić’s "Judita" in Venice in 1521, a new monumental sculpture has been installed in a public space – a white Brač stone sculpture representing the most famous heroine of Croatian literature. The author of this large-scale sculpture is academic sculptor Lovre Jakšić, and the project was realised thanks to the efforts of Mr. Nediljko Matić, president of the Croatian Unity Association.
The sculpture, 210 cm tall, was created in a modern style with distinct classical elements. As a public sculpture, it was installed in a highly symbolic location – the courtyard of Marko Marulić High School in Split, an institution that itself bears the name of the great writer. This further emphasises the connection between literary heritage, art and education.
Due to the size and sensitivity of the material, the installation of the sculpture was particularly demanding, but our specialised workshop was fully equipped, technically and logistically, for such an undertaking. A highly professional approach ensured the precise and damage-free completion of this complex task.
The unveiling was ceremonial and well-covered by the media, with numerous guests from the fields of culture, art and politics in attendance. This public sculpture is not only an homage to Marulić's literary work but also a powerful artistic gesture honouring women in literary history – in this case, symbolically interpreted through the figure of Judith.
The monumental character, the execution in white Brač stone and Lovre Jakšić’s artistic signature make this sculpture an important contribution to public space, the arts and collective memory.
