Our stonemasonry workshop is currently working on one of our most demanding and unconventional tomb designs. This unique project brings together contemporary stone design and traditional stonemasonry craftsmanship. Numerous stone elements are carefully shaped into a harmonious composition inspired by the sea, its movement and its power.
The client is a sea captain whose life has been inseparably connected with the sea. His personal story became the starting point for the design of the tomb. Rather than relying on conventional flat surfaces and regular geometric shapes, the tomb features flowing, dynamic lines that evoke the movement of the sea.
The distinctive character of this tomb is evident in the design of the horizontal tomb slab and the surrounding stone elements. Its surface features a series of gentle, parallel waves that gradually rise and fall, creating a sense of rhythm and the continuous movement of the sea. The undulating surface extends into monumental stone waves shaped into spiral arches. These also serve as memorial elements, with designated areas for inscriptions, including names and other personal details. Their pronounced curves evoke sea waves just before they break, while the carefully finished inner surfaces emphasise the fluidity of the forms.
A particularly distinctive feature is the roughly fractured edges of the stone waves, symbolising sea foam. The contrast between smooth, precisely finished surfaces and rough-hewn stone further enhances the dynamic character of the entire composition. Through this approach, we aim to push the boundaries of conventional tomb and gravestone design. A tomb need not be merely a functional stone structure; it can become a unique sculptural and architectural work that reflects the personality and life story of the person who commissioned it.
Creating memorials of this kind requires a significantly different approach from conventional stone slab processing. Each element must be carefully shaped to achieve the desired curves, appropriate proportions and precise alignment with the adjoining components. The photographs from our workshop illustrate various stages of production, from machining large stone blocks to shaping complex curved surfaces. One of the most demanding aspects is the creation of the spiral waves, whose inner and outer curves require exceptional precision during cutting and finishing.
Another distinctive feature is that these complex forms have been carved from just a few large blocks of stone. Due to their specific geometry, the final finishing process involves extensive hand sanding and polishing, requiring considerably more time and labour than working with flat surfaces. Projects of this kind present our workshop with new challenges, requiring us to adapt established techniques and develop new technical solutions. It is through these challenges that we continue to explore and expand the possibilities of contemporary stonemasonry.
The photographs show only part of the tomb, which is currently under construction. The next stage of the project will include the installation of a monumental sculpture of a woman alongside the stylised sea waves. The sculpture will complete the visual and symbolic character of the tomb, bringing its sculptural and architectural elements together into a unified composition. Every element of this tomb has been individually designed for the client, creating a one-of-a-kind work that expresses a personal story and an enduring connection with the sea through stone.
We will soon share new photographs from our stonemasonry workshop, documenting the next stages in the creation of this unique stone tomb.
