New lookout with stone benches celebrates the fishing heritage of the island of Pag

At the Ded location above Stara Novalja, with a stunning view of the sea and the island of Rab, a unique public space design project has been completed – “Lookout of the Staronovalja Fishermen’s Posts”. The project was commissioned by the Stara Novalja Tourist Board and conceived by architect Marija Mia Peranić and Dr. Art. Dina Jakšić Pavasović, in collaboration with designer Goran Pavasović.

The aim of the project was to preserve and convey knowledge about the fishing tradition, the old fishermen’s posts, and the coastal way of life, to both local residents and numerous visitors. Natural materials were used in the making, and from our stonemasonry workshop came modern benches made of Brač stone, whose form evokes the surface of the sea. In addition, a central stone element was created – a wind rose with the names of the traditional fishermen’s posts.

A special emphasis in the project is placed on symbolism: alongside the names of the fishermen’s posts, the directions of their locations are carved in stone, and these very directions define the orientation and length of each individual bench. In this way, all elements of the lookout are functionally and thematically connected into a whole that celebrates the fishing heritage of the island of Pag and Stara Novalja.

The project was financed through the 6th FLAG Call for Measure 2.A.1 for the development of tourism-related content linked to the fishing tradition of the LAGUR Tramuntana region, with a total amount of €38,878.61 (85% EU funds, 15% from the Republic of Croatia’s budget).

From our side, we particularly highlight a truly beautiful collaboration with architect Mia, the Tourist Board of Stara Novalja and LAGUR Tramuntana.
