Tomb for the Šlender Family
- this tomb made of white Brač stone is one of the most distinctive works created in our workshop – an example of how stone can be transformed into a gentle, almost weightless material. The overall form of the tomb gives the impression of being carved from a single block of stone, shaped to resemble a sheet of paper softly folding from the wall down to the ground, creating a refined yet powerful composition. The stone loses its usual heaviness, becoming light, delicate, and airy, which gives the monument a unique artistic and emotional quality. A narrow vertical opening cuts through the main stone surface, forming a negative cross shape – a simple yet profoundly symbolic detail. A slight forward tilt of one surface brings the cross subtly out of plane, making it a dominant element in the composition without disturbing the minimalist harmony. The “Šlender” inscription, crafted from stainless steel in an elegant handwritten script, stands prominently on the front of the monument. This detail symbolises both the personal and professional legacy of the tomb’s owner, a respected doctor from the island of Brač. The paper-like form evokes the symbolic connection between his profession, knowledge, and the lasting mark he left behind. The tomb was designed by Dražen Jakšić, whose distinctive style is reflected in strong geometry, clean lines, and subtle symbolism. This project represents a contemporary approach to the design of memorials, where stone craftsmanship becomes a form of artistic expression. The combination of minimalism, precision, and poetic symbolism makes this monument a remarkable example of modern stonemasonry design.
