Creation of a Unique Tomb in Makarska – White Brač Stone in the Service of Memory

Our Jakšić workshop proudly presents another carefully designed and expertly crafted tomb with a headstone, this time created for the Puharić family in Makarska. This project is especially meaningful to us because it represents a highly unique piece, significantly different from our usual designs. It once again shows how the creation of a tomb can be deeply personal, symbolic and artistically refined.

The tomb and headstone are made from white Brač stone, a material known for its durability, purity and emotional symbolism. Our designer, Dražen Jakšić, developed a distinctive concept emphasising soft lines and a strong metaphorical message. His idea was to shape a stone surface that evokes the image of a drawn curtain – a symbol of closure, a quiet marking of the end of a life.

The stone surface is crafted to resemble fabric gently moving in the air. Achieving this fluid movement in such a firm material required exceptional precision and craftsmanship, proving how demanding and poetic the creation of a headstone can be. At one point, the curved form fully turns inward, creating an elegant space for a vase and flowers, seamlessly merging function with aesthetics.

A meaningful detail can be found on the horizontal stone slab – a patch of rough, unpolished stone resembling natural rock. This element was added as a symbolic reference to Mount Biokovo, honouring the memory of the deceased, who was a passionate mountaineer and nature enthusiast. In this way, the natural landscape of Makarska becomes part of the design itself.

This tomb once again confirms how the creation of a tomb and the creation of a headstone can become a dignified act when executed with knowledge, sensitivity and respect. When white Brač stone is shaped with craftsmanship and care, the result is a lasting monument that preserves family stories and memories in the most meaningful way.
