Family Tomb for the Štambuk Family
- the Jakšić stonemasonry workshop on Brač preserves the tradition of shaping white Brač stone into headstones and family graves. Each of our works is created as a union of experience, craftsmanship, and respect for the life story it represents. Such is the case with the family tomb for the Štambuk family, realised in the town of Selca, which shows how even the smallest intervention can become a powerful artistic message and a lasting monument. For this grave, we created only the headstone, yet this single element became the bearer of deep symbolism. The composition is based on the contrast of two noble materials: white Brač stone Sv. Petar and black granite Impala. Their interplay creates a strong visual and symbolic effect. In the centre, the negative form outlines a tree – a universal symbol of life, growth, and endurance. This motif was not chosen by chance. The deceased was a respected and well-known woodworker, and the tree becomes a natural reflection of his life’s work, skills, and passion. The tree is carved from black stone, deepening the meaning of the monument. Black symbolises death and transience, while white Brač stone brings light, permanence, and dignity. Together, they form a composition where life and death, craft and legacy, ending and eternity intertwine. This headstone stands out because it connects artistic expression with a personal story in a simple yet moving way. Such a synthesis of contrast and symbolism is what distinguishes the work of the Jakšić workshop – monuments that are not only stone forms, but enduring stories carved into white Brač stone, left to future generations as a testimony of memory and respect.
