Custom tombs and grave monuments in white Brač stone

A tomb is designed for a particular burial site and a particular family. Jaksic Stonemasonry Workshop brings proportion, stone, inscription, relief and surface finish together in a restrained and lasting composition.

The process begins with photographs, available dimensions and a review of the site. Once the form and details have been agreed, the workshop prepares the design, works the stone, and arranges delivery and installation according to the conditions at the cemetery.

A tomb designed for its family and setting

The way a tomb sits within the cemetery is as important as any individual detail. The height and width of the elements, the balance of solid surfaces, the position of the inscription and the form of a cross or another symbol all shape the final impression. The design is developed for the actual burial site rather than selected from a fixed template.

White Brač stone may be honed, polished, combed or worked by hand. Each finish changes the way the stone reads in natural light and affects the clarity of lettering, relief and joints. The surface is chosen in relation to the design, location and future care of the tomb.

    We review photographs, dimensions, position and cemetery requirements relevant to the work.

  2. Design

    We agree the proportions, arrangement, inscription, symbols and any relief.

  3. Stonework

    The elements are prepared and finished to the approved dimensions and details.

  4. Delivery and installation

    Transport and installation are planned for the location and agreed scope of work.

Details that belong to the same composition

An inscription, portrait, cross, relief or sculptural element should belong to the architecture of the tomb. Where a commission includes original sculpture, the workshop combines stonemasonry with experience in stone sculpture. Read more about the material and its finishes on the Brač stone page.

Questions about custom tombs

Yes. Each tomb is developed for the available space, the family wishes and the chosen stone. Proportion, arrangement, inscription, relief, surface finish and installation are agreed as one project. The dimensions of the burial site and the rules of the particular cemetery must be checked before production begins.

Yes. The stone and individual blocks are selected for the form, dimensions and intended finish. White Brač stone may be honed, polished, combed or worked by hand. The final choice should suit the design, the position of the burial site and the practical requirements for future care.

Yes. An inscription, cross, symbol, portrait or another relief, and a sculptural element can be designed as part of the whole. Letterform, carving depth, position and finish are considered together with the architecture of the tomb so that the detail does not appear to have been added later.

Send the name and location of the cemetery, photographs of the burial site, available dimensions and a short description of what you have in mind. Include a drawing or an example of a suitable form and finish if available. The workshop can then identify what else must be checked.
